Challenges
  • Install fibre optic distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) and distributed temperature sensing (DAS) systems behind casing to below a deep saline formation.
  • Suspend additional DAS/DTS systems and electronic permanent downhole pressure gauges (PDHG) across the formation inside the same deviated wells.
  • Deploy the suspended fibre optic and electronic downhole sensors without the aid of a completion rig.
  • All suspended downhole sensor equipment needed to contend with high corrosion, erosion and abrasion potential and high tensile loads.
Objectives
  • Monitor injection conformance and migration of CO2 into the saline formation.
  • Verify containment of the CO2 plume within the disposal formation and ensure zero CO2 fugitive emissions past barriers in the injection wells.
  • Validate next-generation monitoring and verification (M&V) technology to track and image CO2 plumes.

  • GEO PSI integrated Insert FibreTraq and Insert ResTraq systems into a single opto-electronic architecture.
  • The hybrid system uses a single wireline toolstring to house the PDHG and fibre end termination sub.
  • The toolstring incorporates roller guides and weight stem to aid deployment in deviated well trajectories.
  • The toolstring is deployed on a steel support wire, with fibre optic and electrical cables clamped to the wire.
  • Four hybrid systems were successfully installed, using a novel rig-less deployment technique.
  • Casing-deployed DAS/DTS systems were also successfully installed in the same four wells.
